ELD LEVEL 2/3 – ENGLISH - A102EY/A103EY

Year: 9-12 

Prerequisites: ELD 1, appropriate assessment or recommendation of instructor

This class is a continuation of ESL I with a shift in emphasis from basic survival to preparing the student to successfully enter the regular English program. Students should have a grasp of basic English vocabulary and be able to communicate orally in English. A special emphasis is placed on reading and writing skills, with a literature and writing process approach, which parallels the activities in a regular English class. A secondary emphasis is on preparing the student to successfully complete the English proficiency graduation requirements.


ELD LEVEL I – ENGLISH - A101EY

Year: 9-12 

Prerequisites: Non-English speaker

This is a communication-based class designed to teach English through the methodologies of the natural approach. This course includes mastery of survival skills, a broad-based vocabulary, expressions, and pronunciation. The course emphasizes empowering students with a sense of pride and knowledge related to their own cultural heritage. It includes reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills using core curriculum literature when appropriate. This course incorporates the creation of books, paragraph writing and story mapping, tailored to the abilities and needs of the students. The course may be repeated for credit with the approval of the instructor.


P-AMERICAN LITERATURE - A500PY

Year: 11 

Prerequisites: None

American Literature is a required college prep English course for eleventh grade. The readings will include the Scarlet Letter, Raisin in the Sun, and O Pioneers. Supplemental readings vary and may include Huckleberry Finn, The Crucible, Red Badge of Courage, The Great Gatsby, Death of a salesman, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, or The Glass menagerie. The writing assignments are essays-the controversial issues and the reflective– with a required speech to persuade. Classes include both small group and general discussion and outside reading and reports, both written and oral. Units can include literary movements, rites of passage, and ethnic and cultural literature. This course meets the subject area “b” requirement for the UC / CSU approved course list.


P-ELD LEVEL 4 - ENGLISH - A104EY

Year: 9-12 

Prerequisites:  

This Course picks up where ELDI , II & III left off. Students continue to develop the skill of observing, inquiring, and reporting that will enable them to relate their own experiences to the literature. SDAIE requires more complex writing assignments than ESL and a closer reading of novels, plays, short stories, poems and essays. Writing assignments include narrative, research, and persuasive essays related to the literature. This course lays a foundation for all other English classes an English learner will take at Petaluma High. This course meets the subject area “b” requirement for the UC / CSU approved course list. Students may only use 1 year of ELD 4 towards the “b” requirement.


P-ENGLISH 10 HONORS - A110HY

Year: 10 

Prerequisites: Qualification by application, freshman teacher recommendation, writing sample.

This course parallels the regular English 10 course but provides student with extended learning opportunities. Students will read additional literary works, increase their knowledge of literary terms and movements, and improve skills in writing and literary analysis. This course meets the subject area “b” requirement for the UC / CSU approved course list.


P-ENGLISH 11 HONORS - A111HY

Year: 11 

Prerequisites: Qualification by application, sophomore teacher recommendation, writing sample.

Honors 11 English is an accelerated course for students with exceptional analytical and writing skills. The selection process includes an application, an essay examination, a test of written English language conventions, evaluation of the student's previous English grades, and teacher recommendation. The course provides a comprehensive study of literature and composition covering all genres of American literature. Students will gain a broad background knowledge of America’s literary history and will study a minimum of ten novels/dramas during the course of the year. Emphasis is placed on reading formal literary criticism, increasing students’ knowledge of literary terms and movements, and improving students' skills in writing and literary analysis. This course meets the subject area “b” requirement for the UC / CSU approved course list.


P-ENGLISH 12 - A112PY

Year: 12 

Prerequisites: None

This is a college prep comprehensive year-long English course. The goal of this class is to provide students with standards based instruction in reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Students will write college essays, literary responses, and personal responses, which prepare them for their post high school educational goals. The textbook will give them a wide range of reading materials both fiction and nonfiction. Oral presentations will be an important part of the curriculum. This course meets the subject area “b” requirement for the UC / CSU approved course list.


P-ENGLISH 9 - A109PY

Year: 9 

Prerequisites: None

Ninth grade English is a required, yearlong literature-based course designed to develop and refine skills from the California Framework. Emphasis on reading, writing, and critical thinking, as well as speaking and listening. Students will read from several genres- novel, biography, poetry, short story, plays, essays and non-fiction. Students will use a wide range of writing strategies and will communicate for a variety of purposes and audiences. This course meets the subject area “b” requirement for the UC / CSU approved course list.


P-ENGLISH 9 HONORS - A109HY

Year: 9 

Prerequisites: Qualification by application, English teacher recommendation, and writing sample.

This course parallels the regular English 9 course but provides student with extended learning opportunities. Students will read additional literary works, increase their knowledge of literary terms and movements, and improve skills in writing and literary analysis. This course meets the subject area “b” requirement for the UC / CSU approved course list.


P-ENGLISH LITERATURE/COMPOSITION AP - A200AY

Year: 12 

Prerequisites: Placement by exam and teacher recommendation

Advanced Placement Literature and Composition is the senior honors course designed to prepare students to take and pass the Advanced Placement examination administered nationally in the spring. Students are selected based on scores in the qualifying examination given in the spring of the junior year and upon recommendations of the junior English teacher. The curriculum is a comprehensive literature and composition program covering all areas and genres of English, American and world literature. Students are evaluated on concept application to new material, monthly interpretive/critical essays and/or oral presentations on outside readings selected from a reading list, performance on AP model impromptus and objective tests, and class and small group discussion. The class is designed to increase with maximum intensity the students depth and range of literary experience. . This course meets the subject area “b” requirement for the UC / CSU approved course list.


P-PUBLIC SPEAKING - M120PS

Year: (SEM 9) 

Prerequisites: None

This course is intended for all students interested in improving oral communication skills and gaining confidence in speaking. This course is designed to help students develop speaking skills in a non-threatening atmosphere. Included will be library research techniques, outlining and writing speeches. This course meets the subject area “g” requirement for the UC / CSU approved course list.
