P-AP FRENCH LANGUAGE IV / HONORS FRENCH LITERATURE V - J704AY
Year: 9-12
Prerequisites: A grade of B or better in French 3/4 or teacher recommendation
Students with serious interest in fluency are urged to enroll in this two year course which challenges them in new ways. The class is conducted completely in French, with curriculum devoted entirely to the study of classic French literature. Recommended as a two-year course, to help students in fourth year prepare for the Advanced Placement Language exam, then follow a college level honors literature course for the fifth year, this course is intended to stretch students to their limits in order to gain competency and confidence in all elements of the language. Expect a great deal of talking and writing in French about everything from literature to culture to daily life. The Advanced Placement Language test is recommended at the end of the fourth year, but must be taken in either the fourth or fifth year. The content of the fourth-year honors Spanish course is more complex, and the students have more freedom in all language activities. Speaking practice consists of interest, literary and cultural discussions, and oral reports on readings done in or outside of the class. Emphasis is placed on practice of AP activities for the end of the year test. Certain Literary works needed for Spanish Literature V AP are also introduced. The fifth-year Spanish course is designed to parallel the skill development of a third-year college Spanish course in advanced grammar, conversation, and literature. The course focuses on the mastery of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills not necessarily addressed in the traditional Spanish language textbook. Emphasis is placed on the continued challenge provided by Spanish Literature. In AP Language classes students are encouraged to take the AP exam. In AP Literature students are required to take the AP exam. This course meets the subject area “e” requirement for the UC / CSU approved course list. Prerequisites: Grade of C or better in French I or teacher recommendation
The second year of French continues in a similar manner as French 1 with the goals of applying a more specialized vocabulary and tuning the finer elements of the French grammatical system. An even greater insistence on the use of French in all elements of teaching and communicating will be noticed. Short excerpts from novels and short stories are integrated into the curriculum accompanied by an increase in cultural exposure. Prerequisites: Grade of a C or better in French 2 or teacher recommendation
In this third year class the students begin experiencing a transition into communicating almost entirely in French (90%). Each student also keeps daily journals. Novels, short stories, and plays are read in their entirety with daily discussion and analysis of literary elements. Satellite and video are used regularly as a means by which the student may discuss and analyze character, plot, setting, and theme in a visual presentation. Grammar emphasis decreases to about 50% of our time, and once again students are encouraged to become involved in our immersion program. Cultural knowledge is always important and adds reality to class work. This course meets the subject area “e” requirement for the UC / CSU approved course list.
