P-AP FRENCH LANGUAGE IV / HONORS FRENCH LITERATURE V - J704AY

Year: 9-12 

Prerequisites: A grade of B or better in French 3/4 or teacher recommendation

Students with serious interest in fluency are urged to enroll in this two year course which challenges them in new ways. The class is conducted completely in French, with curriculum devoted entirely to the study of classic French literature. Recommended as a two-year course, to help students in fourth year prepare for the Advanced Placement Language exam, then follow a college level honors literature course for the fifth year, this course is intended to stretch students to their limits in order to gain competency and confidence in all elements of the language. Expect a great deal of talking and writing in French about everything from literature to culture to daily life. The Advanced Placement Language test is recommended at the end of the fourth year, but must be taken in either the fourth or fifth year. P-AP SPANISH LANGUAGE IV - J604AY

Prerequisites: Grade of B or better in Spanish 3 or teacher recommendation

The content of the fourth-year honors Spanish course is more complex, and the students have more freedom in all language activities. Speaking practice consists of interest, literary and cultural discussions, and oral reports on readings done in or outside of the class. Emphasis is placed on practice of AP activities for the end of the year test. Certain Literary works needed for Spanish Literature V AP are also introduced. P-AP SPANISH LITERATURE V - J605AY

Year: 9-12 

Prerequisites: Grade of B or better in Spanish 4 or teacher recommendation

The fifth-year Spanish course is designed to parallel the skill development of a third-year college Spanish course in advanced grammar, conversation, and literature. The course focuses on the mastery of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills not necessarily addressed in the traditional Spanish language textbook. Emphasis is placed on the continued challenge provided by Spanish Literature. In AP Language classes students are encouraged to take the AP exam. In AP Literature students are required to take the AP exam. This course meets the subject area “e” requirement for the UC / CSU approved course list. This course meets the Foreign Language / Visual Performing Arts requirement for graduation.


P-FRENCH 2 - J402PY

Year: 9-12 

Prerequisites: Grade of C or better in French I or teacher recommendation

The second year of French continues in a similar manner as French 1 with the goals of applying a more specialized vocabulary and tuning the finer elements of the French grammatical system. An even greater insistence on the use of French in all elements of teaching and communicating will be noticed. Short excerpts from novels and short stories are integrated into the curriculum accompanied by an increase in cultural exposure. P-FRENCH 3 - J403PY

Year: 9-12 

Prerequisites: Grade of a C or better in French 2 or teacher recommendation

In this third year class the students begin experiencing a transition into communicating almost entirely in French (90%). Each student also keeps daily journals. Novels, short stories, and plays are read in their entirety with daily discussion and analysis of literary elements. Satellite and video are used regularly as a means by which the student may discuss and analyze character, plot, setting, and theme in a visual presentation. Grammar emphasis decreases to about 50% of our time, and once again students are encouraged to become involved in our immersion program. Cultural knowledge is always important and adds reality to class work. This course meets the subject area “e” requirement for the UC / CSU approved course list. P-FRENCH I - J401PY

Prerequisites: Overall GPA of 3.0 or teacher recommendation (9th grade) Overall GPA of 2.0 or better or teacher recommendation (10-12)

This is an introductory course in French, during which students study simple grammar and vocabulary to form a fundamental ability to read, write, and speak basic French. Special emphasis is placed on learning and communicating in French. French culture weaves in and out of all language lessons. Students, age 16 and above, in all French classes may participate in an immersion program to France which is offered to enhance the sense of importance and meaning in the learning of the language. This course meets the subject area “e” requirement for the UC / CSU approved course list. This course meets the Foreign Language / Visual Performing Arts requirement for graduation.

Spanish I is an introductory course in Spanish which teaches the foundations of the language and the culture of the Spanish-speaking world. The course includes basic vocabulary to help in simple communication, and introduces basic grammatical structures. The class includes the four language skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Students begin to use the language as a vehicle for communication. This course meets the subject area “e” requirement for the UC / CSU approved course list. This course meets the Foreign Language / Visual Performing Arts requirement for graduation.

Prerequisites: Department recommends a C or better in Spanish I

Spanish 2 students will build on grammar and vocabulary skills introduced in Spanish 1. Special emphasis will be placed on the communicative skills of understanding spoken Spanish and responding in kind. Reading and writing in the target language will also be enhanced. Grammatically, Spanish 2 will concentrate on mastering the various indicative tenses and other foundational language aspects of Spanish. There will continue to be regular exposure to and education about the Spanish-speaking world. This course meets the subject area “e” requirement for the UC / CSU approved course list. Prerequisites: Department recommends a C or better in Spanish 2

Spanish 3 continues instruction in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing Spanish and further enhances education about the Spanish-speaking world. The course reviews grammar previously learned and introduces additional points. There is additional emphasis on using Spanish to communicate. Reading and writing in Spanish will be increased. Class is conducted mainly in Spanish. This course meets the subject area “e” requirement for the UC / CSU approved course list. This course meets the Foreign Language / Visual Performing Arts requirement for graduation.


P-SPANISH FOR NATIVE SPEAKERS I - J6N1PY

Year: 9-12 

Prerequisites: The student should have Spanish as a first language or have regular contact with Spanish language at home.

This course is designed to maintain, increase, and enhance native language academic skills. Through the study and analysis of literature, students will develop their critical thinking skills. The student will be exposed to complex grammatical concepts and structures. Students will be expected to demonstrate formal written language as developed within the framework of this class. P-SPANISH FOR NATIVE SPEAKERS II - J6N2PY

Year: 10-12 

Prerequisites: A grade of C or better in Spanish for Native Speakers I or approval of instructor.

This is a literature-based course designed to refine the formal and written language of native speakers. Through the study and analysis of various literary works, students will continue to develop their critical thinking skills. The indicative and subjunctive moods will be extensively covered.
